With the 2011 Tohoku earthquake or Great East Japan Earthquake still fresh in our minds, we are moo-ved to prepare for the “Big One” here in California by participating in the 2011 Great California Shake Out, Thursday October 20 at 10:20AM. Practice how you will protect you and your loved ones during earthquakes and increase your preparedness. While California buildings are generally built to a very tough standard, no one can tell how every building will perform during a very large violent earthquake. We all need to be on prepared and do all we can to reduce our risks.
The Great California ShakeOut is an annual statewide earthquake safety drill that began in 2008 as ‘The Great Southern California Shakeout’, and expanded last year to the entire state with 6.9 million citizens taking part. When we last checked around 6.8 million people already registered for 2011, and about 77,000 of them are from San Mateo County. The event proper is a ‘Drop, Cover, Hold On’ set for 10:20 am on the 20th, but can be held at any time.
This organization also provides many resources about how to prepare for and survive an earthquake. The Secure Your Spacehas advise on how to make sure our homes and businesses are as earthquake-safe as possible. Advice on how to retrofit your home is also available here. You can find even more information here that COWs can follow today to make their space safer.
Be prepared, sign up today for the drill and learn what you can do to protect yourself and your family and friends.
