The annual Reigning By the Bay Event is a horse lover’s dream. Held at the Woodside Horse Park, the competition is fierce but it is the love of and passion for the horses that drive this event. It is an official National Horse Reining Association (NHRA) event with many exhibitors and trainers.
“Reining” is a judged event designed to show the athletic ability of a ranch type horse within the confines of a show arena. In an NRHA competition, contestants are required to run a pattern from the NRHA Handbook guiding or controlled what appears to be effortlessly. Each pattern includes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs over the hocks, 360 degree spins done in place, and exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse. Reining was first recognized as a sport in 1949 by the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), the world’s largest equestrian organization. Reining became a full medal sport in 2002 at the World Equestrian Games in Spain. It is a sight worth seeing.
The mission of our local Reigning By the Bay, Inc. is to promote the equestrian sport of Reining. Its goal is to elevate public awareness of the sport and to encourage more participation, raise skill levels and educate the public. The Peninsula Humane Society is once again in the spotlight as the featured Charity and will be on site throughout the with all kinds of smaller four legged friends.
If you truly love animals and enjoy watching all that horses can do, this is an event you just can’t miss.
