The ninth annual Day of the Horse is just almost here on this Saturday, October 12th, and we’re making hay about it! The Day of the Horse is put on by the Woodside-area Horse Owner’s Association and celebrates horses and the equestrian lifestyle that help make life in Woodside so special. This year’s theme will be “Riding Around the World.”
The festival is a fun way to meet your neighbors and support our Town’s equestrian heritage. Funds raised from the Day of the Horse go to support horse-related causes in our area such as trails in the Woodside area and surrounding parks and the Woodside Junior Riders, among other projects. Over $100,000 has been raised over the years for these important causes.
Admission to the Horse Fair is free, while participation in the annual Progressive Trail Ride costs a small fee. If you’re the type who loves to volunteer, they welcome more than a hundred volunteers to help put on this event each year. Information on volunteering is available here.
This year’s Fair runs from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm by the Woodside Town Hall (find a map here). It features live music, a petting zoo, and great food. Pony rides and the Wells Fargo Stagecoach (10:30 – 1:30) will delight young visitors and put them up close and personal with these beautiful animals. The Fair also includes crafts, a working blacksmith and educational exhibits from local equestrian cow-munity groups, including finding out where to go for riding instruction. Don’t forget to check out the Woodside Cow-munity Museum, which is open and welcoming visitors.
The other big part of the Day of the Horse is the Progressive Trail Ride. This year, it runs from 11 – 2 and follows a path charted by organizers. Participants wear outfits reflecting the year’s theme, and come from as far away as Southern California. Snacks, drinks, and restrooms are provided at rest stops along the route, and horses are pampered utterly with delicious treats! This event draws more than 300 people each year and is a wonderful tradition. Registration info is all right here.
If you wanted to check out the Mounted Patrol Grounds that day, sponsor exhibits will be on display. That’s also where goody bags for successful completion of the Progressive Trail Ride will be awarded.
You can check out photos from last year’s fun event and then make plans to check out this year’s Day of the Horse in person!
