Filoli, the historic Woodside estate famed for its enchanting gardens and its rich history, is inviting the cow-munity to celebrate the season during the first weekend of August! Filoli’s Summer Celebration is the Great Big Garden Bonanza, displaying the amazing gardens at their summer peak of color and fragrance.
Built between 1915 – 1917 for the Bourn family, the 654-acre estate is a California State Historic landmark. Summer is perhaps the best time of year to explore this Woodside treasure, with the orchards filling with fruit and flowers all over the estate exploding with color.
Running from Friday, August 3rd through Sunday, August 5th, the Bonanza is a showcase of the grounds featuring gardening demonstrations, informative talks about the Estate, walking tours, and diverting crafts andevents for children.
Also running during the Bonanza is ‘Handcrafted and Through the Lens,’ – a multimedia exhibit of drawings and beautiful nature photography – a don’t-miss opportunity.
Some highlights of the Bonanza include:
Friday features an Orchard Walk and talk through Filoli’s heritage orchards and a talk on garden photography. The afternoon events including demos on flower arranging using foliage and seasonal fruit, and a “walk and talk” on vegetable garden supports.
Saturday morning starts of with a “walk and talk” all about summer rose care through Filoli’s drop-dead gorgeous rose gardens. Later in the day, a visit through Filoli’s “cutting garden” that provides flowers for the beautiful arrangements throughout the house will be conducted.
Sunday kicks off with a walking tour and discussion of the uses of stately English ivy – how to use it well in landscaping without overwhelming your grounds. Later on, the topic is lavender – lavender wands, sachets, and other uses of this classic plant.
There are events to keep kids busy and wonderful cooking demonstrations all weekend, as well. A full schedule of events is available here.
