Millions of people worldwide will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:15 a.m. on October 15th during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills. These drills have been conducted annually in California since 2008. More than a thousand local government agencies are participating worldwide this year. However only 6 local government agencies are registered for participation the California ShakeOut in San Mateo County, with only a total of 6,230 participants: Central County Fire Department (Burlingame);City of Menlo Park and Menlo Park Fire Protection District; City of South San Francisco; and the County of San Mateo.
How come neither our Town or our Fire District is participating? Also, Portola Valley Schools are participating but not Woodsides? Even our Citizens Emergency Response Preparedness Program(CERPP) is not participating even though they ask here are you prepared?
Individuals, businesses and organizations, not just local government can participate too. ShakeOut is also a major activity of America’s PrepareAthon! America’s PrepareAthon! is a grassroots campaign for action to increase community preparedness and resilience. For more detail go here.
We need to do everything we can to be prepared and to know what to do when the inevitable “Big One” comes.
